Well, Summer has definitely arrived since my last update, with some absolutely stunning weather. It has been very dry, with unusually only one good fall of rain, on the 22ndand 23rd, when the river went to 60. Since then it has dropped off, as a result of some exceptionally dry and warm weather with temperatures today reaching 26 degrees C.
Not ideal salmon fishing weather to say the least, but we are lucky in that most of our customers realise that Delphi is not just about the fish, but the sheer beauty of the place, the banter and the people.
We have had some fish though, eight since my last update. Three of these were on the 23rdafter the flood. Benjy Weeks had a lovely fish from the Turn Pool on a Willie Gunn, weighing in at 11lbs1oz.
Mauricio Gordillo Alcola from Spain on his first visit to Delphi had a nice fish of approx. 8.5lbs from the Rock Pool on a Delphi Collie. Benjy Weeks had a second fish later in the day of 5lbs14ozs from Finlough on a Collie Dog.
We blanked the following day and then on the 23rdSimon Albertini had a fish of off Finlough of 9lbs3ozs on a Willie Gunn. Since then it has been difficult with plenty fish in Finlough, but they are playing hard to get. Despite the difficult conditions Mark Corps had a fish from the Grilse Pool of approx. 10lbs on a Willie Gunn.
It was all quiet then till yesterday when we had three. Bertrand Fenart who has been coming to Delphi for over 35 years managed to land a nice fish of approx. 9lbs off Doolough and his boat partner Jean Louis Berthomieu also had one of approx. 9lbs. Angus Sutherland had a nice fish off Finlough in the afternoon in very difficult conditions of 9lbs5ozs on a Green Highlander.
At the moment, it looks like our fine weather will continue for a while, but I suppose at this stage we can’t complain as we have had excellent conditions for the year to date and the fine weather does put everyone in a good mood, except of course the odd angler, but most are just happy to be here.
