Firstly, I must apologise for not updating you for a couple of weeks, as I was off for seven days, fishing, believe it or not! Well our heatwave and drought conditions are now certainly a distant memory. It takes a while to get used to the river being above 0. Yesterday, the river rose to 80 so the system is well and truly washed out at this stage.
We have had sixteen salmon since my last update and a nice few sea trout approx. 70. Damien Maguire was first on the score sheet with a fish of 4lbs2ozs on the 3rdfrom the Kings Pool on a Cascade. Urs then arrived for his normal week and as usual he had the lions share of the catch with seven for his week. The first of these was a beautiful sea liced fish of 5lbs3ozs from Quarry Pool on a Cascade.
Gareth Beattie had a fresh fish on the 7thof 3lbs6ozs from the Waterfall on a Willie Gunn. Urs had his second later that day from the Meadow of 2lbs12.5ozs, also on a Willie Gunn. William Hamilton also had one, off Finlough of approx. 3lbs on a Peter Ross. The Beattie’s, William and Gareth had one each on the 8th.
William had one off Finlough of 8lbs4ozs on a Black Shrimp, while Gareth had one from the Turn Pool of 4lbs on a Galway Green. Urs then had three on the 9th, from the Whin, Quarry and Turn, of 3lbs6ozs, 6lbs3ozs and 7lbs10ozs, the first two on an Improved Helmore’s Hackle and the third on a Frances.
On the 10thUrs got into action with the Neighbours Cat Nymph and landed a cracking 12lbs14.5ozs fish from the Turn Pool, the biggest of the year so far. His seventh fish was taken on the 11thfrom the Stream on Finlough of 4lbs13ozs on a Willie Gunn.
Simon Atterbury had a fish of 3lbs13ozs from Fin on the 12thon a Foxford Shrimp. On the 16thAlexander Thim had a fish of 3lbs5ozs from the New Island Pool on a Delphi Collie and finally Bill Wilson managed to land two fish, including his first ever from the Turn Pool yesterday morning, both on a Cascade. The first was approx. 3lbs and the second approx. 5lbs.
On the Sea Trout front, there have been some good catches, the highlight of which was Willie Hamilton and Pat O’Dwyer who had 47 for their week. Dione Roberts also had a trout of approx. 6lbs off Doolough.
We are quiet this week so if anyone is interested in either salmon or sea trout fishing, please contact me directly on 087 6388510. D.McEvoy
