As I stated in my last update, we had an encouraging start to June and this I’m glad to say has indeed continued with 16 landed, 14 grilse and 2 MSW’s. Water levels have also risen throughout the system and although we are experiencing a mini heatwave at present, I think the weather is supposed to break again towards the weekend.
David Dunne continued his good run of form with two fish on the 11th, one of approx. 4lbs from the Rock Pool on a Cascade and one off Finlough of 3lbs14ozs on a Silver Stoat. The 12th produced one with Alan Dunlop landing a beautiful grilse of 5lbs7ozs in the Rock Pool on a Willie Gunn. The 13th saw five landed with Alec Greenwell having one of approx. 4lbs in the Turn Pool on an Allie Shrimp and Alan Dunlop landing two more, one from Finlough of 3lbs11ozs on a Collie Dog and one from the Grilse Pool of approx. 11lbs on a Willie Gunn. Rocky Moran also had two off Finlough of 4lbs10ozs and 4lbs8ozs, both on Cascades.
The 14th belonged to the Horne clan. Sadly, Bill is no longer able to fish with us due to ill health, but his daughters Julia and Shauna and granddaughter Roxanne Davies have kept the family tradition going. Julia and her daughter Roxanne managed to land one each. Julia’s was approx. 4lbs and was taken in the Rock Pool on a Willie Gunn. Roxanne who is on her first serious fishing trip to Delphi landed her first ever salmon, a cracking fish of 14lbs5ozs from the Grilse Pool on a Willie Gunn. It’s great to see young people interested in salmon fishing and needless to say she was rather proud of her feat, as was her mother Julia. Roxanne’s parting words to me were “Thank you for introducing me to salmon fishing”, which was lovely to hear from a young up and coming salmon angler. Well done Roxanne and keep up the good work!
There was a bit of a lull then till the 16th, when Declan Tuffy had one of 3lbs9ozs from Finlough on a Black Shrimp and Rocky Moran had one of approx. 5lbs on a Red Allie, also from Finlough. There were three taken on the 17th, including two first ever salmon, by father and son team, Barry and Simon Lambert, of 3lbs4ozs and 3lbs10ozs from Doolough. Linda McGarry also had a fish of 4lbs3ozs from the Rock Pool on a Willie Gunn. Finally, Charles Cooper who I don’t think has ever blanked at Delphi caught a lovely grilse of approx. 5lbs from the Meadow Pool on a Willie Gunn on the 18th.
The river is now running at 25 and there are fish entering the system all the time, with a couple lost already today. There is a rod or two available on Thursday and Saturday and then it’s busy for a while, so if interested give us a shout. D.McEvoy
