Best Week So Far

Week 15 has proved to be the best week so far this year with 12 fish landed. We had good water all week with a good flood on Monday which set us up nicely for the week with the water now running at 30.

Andrew Lyall got the ball rolling on Sunday with a small fish from the Rock Pool of approx. 4lbs on a Gary Dog. At this stage the water was a little coloured as we had a very strong ENE wind on Finlough that actually churned up the lower end of the lake.

On Monday Alexander Mills kept the family tradition going when he landed two fish in half an hour. The first was from the Whin of approx. 5.5lbs and the second was 8lbs14ozs from the Waterfall on a Willie Gunn Waddington. Peter o Reilly then showed all his experience in landing two in the afternoon. The first was from the Meadow Pool on a Cascade of approx. 5.5lbs and the second on a Felix Dolan from the Rock Pool of approx. 10lbs. Peter then had another the following morning off Finlough, again on a Felix Dolan of 8lbs12ozs.

DL_Donovan_20160410On Wednesday morning it was Mary Donovan’s turn to shine. She hooked a nice fish in the Grilse Pool on her own without any net. She then played the Damsel in Distress card and waved vigorously at a passing car. Lone behold what happened, not one but Three Knights in Shining Armour appeared. As it turned out they were all experienced salmon fishermen; Micky Bewick, Andrew Maund and Steve Smith came to the rescue and duly hand tailed the fish which was approx. 9lbs. The fish was again taken on a Cascade. Rocky Moran had a fish of approx. 6lbs again on a Cascade from the Rock Pool.

There was one on Thursday and it was Peter O’Reilly again with a fish of approx. 8lbs from the Meadow Pool on a Cascade.

DL_Tom_20160410We drew a blank on Friday but we managed to land three yesterday. Martin Ceillier had two off Doolough, on his first outing of the year, one of approx. 4.5lbs and the second of approx. 8lbs. Paul Smyth from Tullamore, also on his first outing had a fine fish of approx. 12lbs from Morrison’s on a Non-Descript which he tied himself.

With a fine week promised hopefully the water will hold up for another few days and the fish will keep coming.

With all the demand for Spring fishing here an opportunity has arisen for anyone interested, of 7 nights in a Boathouse Cottage (which sleeps four) and 6 days fishing on our neighbouring river the Erriff, beginning on Saturday 30th of April.
