Seafood & Farming Traditions Day
Killary Harbour is a dramatic deep fjord that penetrates 12km inland from the Atlantic and into which the lakes and rivers of the Delphi valley drain. It produces what is arguably Europe’s best selection of fresh shellfish within surrounding farm lands that have remained unchanged for generations.
This day begins with pick up by powerboat at Delphi pier and visiting mussel and oyster farms along the fjord, explaining and demonstrating what is involved, and sampling fresh oysters with a glass of Guinness or white wine.
Then follows a scenic walk to a traditional farm to watch a demonstration of sheep shearing, working sheep dogs and turf cutting. On returning to the boat, travel along the fjord to a scenic spot to enjoy a special Delphi picnic lunch before returning to Delphi pier about 4pm.
|10.15 am||Pick up at Delphi Pier by Power Boat.|
|10.30 am||Visit to Mussel farm with guided tour and explanation of mussel farming. (purchase mussels & oysters for dinner in lodge) Oyster tasting with glass of Guinness or white wine.|
|11.30 am||Scenic 20 minute walk to Tom Nee’s farm to watch sheep shearing and working sheep dog followed by turf cutting and turf saving demonstration.20 minute walk back to boat.|
|1.00 pm||Scenic picnic lunch perhaps on an island weather permitting. Otherwise at Scuba Dive West.|
|2.00 pm||Site seeing from boat. Short fishing session (30 minutes). Check and bait lobster pots. Hopefully some for dinner.|
|4.00 pm||Drop off at Delphi PierMinimum group size is 4 persons – prices depending on group size.|
